LPS has created tutorials to support families getting started with the foundational tools students will be expected to use while attending LPS.  Learn more about getting started with Chromebooks, the LPS Portal, GMail, Zoom, and Google Classroom.

10 Remote Learning Things to Know

Students log into all LPS technology tools with their Student ID number (used as a username) and their LPS password assigned by the district.

Students in Grades 6-12 use these credentials daily and should already know them. Elementary students had their ID & Password recorded on a piece of paper enclosed in the Chromebook when it came home. If you don’t still have that paper, ask your student if they know it. They just might!

If your student does not know their ID or password, contact your school office.

If a student believes that their password has been compromised and needs it to be changed, they should enter a student Help Desk ticket to request this. It will be addressed as soon as possible.

There are a few curricular resources that may require a separate password, but not many. In these circumstances a student would need to communicate with their teacher for the correct password information.

LPS stresses the importance of password security with students. However, parents SHOULD have access to their minor student's password. Ask your student for a tour of the digital tools they use for school.

Your student will want to start each day by following a routine that gets their Chromebook ready for learning. These steps should be followed every morning:

  1. Restart the Chromebook
  2. Log into the Portal
  3. Open StudentVUE
  4. Open Google Classroom
  5. Keep an eye on Gmail

Synergy is the official student information and grade book system in LPS.

Parents access Synergy information in a tool called ParentVUE. If you haven’t activated your ParentVUE account, now is the perfect time to get it set up. Please contact your child’s school for activation information.

When teachers send communications using Synergy the messages are accessible either in ParentVUE or via your email.

ParentVUE can be accessed via the web or via a mobile app [Download from the Apple or Google Play Store]

  • All students in grades 2-12 are assigned a Chromebook by LPS as part of our District CLASS plan.

  • K-1 students will also have a Chromebook available for use in remote learning.

This device is LPS property. It is important that both the Chromebook and the full charger are returned to school immediately when students are allowed to return.

Important things for parents to know:

  • If you (as an elementary parent) do not wish for your child to use the device at home, please store it in a safe location until it can be returned to the classroom teacher when school resumes.
  • Instead of using this Chromebook, students may also access learning materials via a personal device by using the LPS Portal (more info below) in a Chrome web browser.

About the Chromebook

A Chromebook is basically a Chrome web browser with a keyboard attached to it. It is not a Mac or Windows computer like you may be used to.

Does your home have WiFi internet access?

Once students sign onto the device, they can connect it to your home Wi-Fi internet access by clicking the Wi-Fi icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen and selecting the network you wish to join.

Web Page Access

This Chromebook is subject to the LPS Internet filter no matter where it travels. In other words, web pages viewed on the Chromebook are filtered by LPS. Your student will not be able to access anything on the Chromebook at home that they would not also be able to access from an LPS classroom. All the same, we recommend that the student use the Chromebook in a public area of your home if possible.

HELP!Problems with the Chromebook

Students may click the "StuHelp" button in the LPS Portal to enter a help ticket for any problem they are experiencing with their assigned Chromebook.

The LPS Portal is the starting point for students accessing LPS approved web tools. It includes icons that students can click on, which take them directly to most web tools without having to sign in a second time.

Students should refresh the Portal screen each day.

A student can access the LPS Portal in various ways:

  • Click the HOME button (icon) in the Chrome menu of a Chromebook
  • Visit
  • Enter keyword: PORTAL on the LPS website

Teachers will hold class sessions for remote students in a video conferencing tool called Zoom.

Students DO NOT need to create a personal Zoom account to join teacher led meetings.

Joining a meeting

In most circumstances, students will join teacher Zoom meetings through Synergy StudentVUE. This ensures the student finds the right link at the right time, and allows for substitute teachers to easily find the right students, as well. For more information on the student instructions, watch this VIDEO.

Rarely, teachers will begin meetings that requires a student to click on a Zoom link.

Students can find a green "Join" button for regular classes on the StudentVUE "Home" screen.

What is Google Classroom?

Google Classroom is a tool used by teachers to create and collect paperless assignments, distribute materials, post announcements, and more. Students can keep track of what is due across multiple classrooms and teachers can quickly see who has or has not completed work, and provide direct, real-time feedback and grades.

How do I get to it?

Students should access Google Classroom via the LPS PortalParents do not have a separate sign-in to Google Classroom in LPS like they do in Synergy ParentVUE. Have your student show you their LPS Google Classrooms.

What do I need to know about it?


All of your student's Classes can be found on one page inside of Google Classroom. To navigate back to this dashboard, click the 3-line button in the top-left corner of the screen and select Classes. 


The Stream is where all announcements, assignments, and posts appear in a continuous chronological list (think of this like a social media stream). Teachers might post announcements and updates to the Stream.


The Classwork tab is where students can find their assignments posted, as well as other resources or materials needed to better complete work.


When students complete assignments, they’ll need to either “turn in” the assignment or “mark as done” depending on the type of assignment the teacher has provided.

Every LPS student has access to an LPS Gmail account that is managed and monitored by Computing Services.

All LPS students should check their LPS Gmail daily for information from teachers and other adults about coursework, lessons, and/or content.

To access student Gmail:

  1. Use the Google Chrome browser to access the LPS Portal.
  2. Select the Gmail icon to access LPS Gmail


  • Student email accounts cannot send messages to email addresses outside of LPS.
  • Student email accounts cannot receive messages sent to them from outside of LPS.
  • Kindergarten-8th grade students can only exchange email messages with their teachers, not fellow students.

In addition to checking out books and other materials, students are able to use databases, audiobooks, and ebooks both at school and at home.

LPS provides a huge library of popular eBooks and audiobooks for all grade levels!

Access the digital encyclopedia and databases from your school’s library website or through the LPS student Portal:

Jump Codes

Teachers use a tool called “LPS Jump” to convert long or complicated web page addresses into shorter, more manageable addresses (similar to other URL shorteners like and Tiny URL). The shortened addresses get a code, referred to as a “Jump Code” that can be entered into the “Search, Keyword” field on the LPS website. For example "o9bk" would link visitors to the Parent Guide to Chromebooks in LPS page. 


Some pages on the LPS website are so commonly used, they’re assigned a “Keyword” that acts very similarly to a Jump Code in that they can be entered into the “Search, Keyword” field on the LPS website as a shortcut to another web page address.

Using Jump Codes and Keywords

  • Visit the LPS website at
  • Enter the keyword or jump code into the search box in the top-right corner of the LPS home page.
  • You will be taken to the intended resource automatically.

Step 1: Take a deep breath. Everyone (families, students, teachers, LPS) is adjusting and learning in their new remote learning environment. Be kind to yourself, and to those you reach out to for support. We all need that!

Supporting Your Learner

Sustained periods of remote education are more successful when students have a routine to follow and a space in which to work and learn. As you consider how to support your child's online learning, be clear about the time of day learning sessions will be held. Plan a schedule for your child to follow. Stick to as predictable a daily routine as possible. Don't forget to include times for breaks and lunch. In addition to developing a daily learning schedule, it is important to identify an at-home learning space. Ideally, this space should have:

  • The student's assigned device (a Chromebook in most situations.)
  • A power outlet for the device's charger
  • Appropriate seating
  • Good lighting

A dedicated learning space for digital learning should ideally be located in a shared area of your home such as at the kitchen table, or a desk in a living room or family room. When your student's learning space is separate from their bedroom and distanced from the television, it sets the expectation and tone that the space is for work and not play. Additionally, an online learning space in a shared area allows parents and guardians to readily support learning while also monitoring online activity.

Nothing disrupts a person's ability to do work more than having to stop and find the materials and tools that are needed for the task. Most remote learning experiences don't just require a device. Students who are learning virtually might also need have the materials and tools such as these available:

  • Paper, pencils, and pens
  • Calculator, ruler, compass, counters (e.g., dry beans), or other items to support math
  • Textbooks, notebooks, and other necessary curriculum resources provided by your student's teacher

LPS supports the implementation of digital curriculum and systems for learning by ensuring that students have persistent access to a computing device sufficient to access and leverage these resources. You can learn more about our "Connected Learning" plan here. 

The device assigned to students in grades 2-12 is a Chromebook. Students in grades 6-12 take the device home with them each night. Students in grades 2-5 keep their device at school in normal circumstances, but may take them home in special circumstances determined by the District.

Students are expected to bring the device to school fully charged each day, while school is in session. Families should make their best effort to take good care of the device, including keeping it safe when not in use, protecting the screen from scratches or cracks, and using the device only for appropriate academic use. Families of students in 6-12th grades may participate in our Chromebook Assurance Program that covers much of the cost of any potential damages.

LPS cares deeply about protecting our students DIGITALLY, just as much as PHYSICALLY. We go to great lengths to make sure that the interactions a student is having online are safe and appropriate, that the data we collect about them as they go through school is securely held, and that we are helping students to continue to make good digital decisions when they are not under our watchful eye. These digital efforts are often less visible than our physical security efforts, so we assemble the following information to increase awareness of these important measures that are happening in LPS every day.

Lincoln Public Schools wants to support the best use of technology to support teaching and learning. We value the partnership of parents and caregivers when learning occurs outside of the school building. As an important reminder, all students and adults using Lincoln Public Schools technology platforms must adhere to  the expectations set forth in the LPS Responsible Use Agreement. In general, students and adults should be sure to:

  • Use respectful behavior and language.  
  • Stick to appropriate topic discussions. 
  • Send only appropriate video transmissions.  
  • Use only appropriate icon, emoji, and avatar submissions.
  • Be honest and use academic integrity by not plagiarizing or copying others’ work
  • Not falsify information about oneself or impersonate others online.
  • Care for the devices assigned to them.

When everyone remembers to act kindly, show consideration for others, and treat one another online as they wish to be treated in person, students and adults alike will be able to focus on learning.

LPS Chromebooks are able to connect to the Internet from wireless networks (Wi-Fi) at home or in public. To access the internet from a non-LPS network, the Chromebook must first authenticate to our filter. If the device does not authenticate to our filter it will run in “Offline Mode” and apps may not behave as expected.

This resource should help if you experience any issues connecting to Wi-Fi while away from LPS.

None of the remote learning resources provided by LPS should require printing.

With that in mind, some families may want to print things anyway. This resource from Google may be helpful.

NOTE: Printing from home is not supported by LPS Computing Services.

Lincoln Public Schools takes its responsibility to filter web content seriously.  Federal Law requires that filtering be in place to protect students from content that might be harmful.  To that end, we enforce web filtering on student devices, whether or not those devices are on district grounds or network.  Student computing devices are filtered, even when they are at home or off campus at other locations.

Summer Chromebook Considerations

Students are retaining possession of the LPS Chromebook during the summer.

Please consider these best practices for using and caring for the device over the summer.
